Concrete...is it too hard?

Hi lovelies

I have a quick question.

Is concrete too hard...harsh...cold or cool for the kitchen?

Or does it add that little something extra?

Gorgeous Jami at Freckled Laundry helped me remember the source for this image
because she has done a WHOLE post on Nancy Fishelson.
Be sure to check out Jami's whole post here.

I think with the right elements such as some warming timber,
 and plenty of natural light,
it could be quite lovely.

What do you think?

Personally I love concrete, especially teamed with the other elements you mentioned. I'm going to paint a small dividing wall to look like concrete. I say go for it!!

I rather like the look it gives in these images....but I'm not sure I'd like it for my own kitchen.

And, Cath, what's coming over you? You have turned overnight into blogging queen!!!

I never though about concrete in the kitchen, until I saw those photos. Brilliant!

I don't think concrete is too hard when balance correctly. I LOVE concrete tops and want them myself. The first image is Nancy Fishelson's kitchen. I have it bookmarked! lol

I personally love it! I think that in time, it might start to feel a little cold, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing, depending on where you live! Love your blog :)

Ohh yes I love it! Such earthy qualities and strangely natural?!!! I wonder if it works as well as slate and marble do for pastry? We have an old form of concrete for our floors in the bedrooms, it's a mixture of lime, ash from the fire and water. I think perhaps the builders (500 years ago) that laid them must have been in a hurry as they are soooo uneven we have to nail the furniture to the walls to stop it from falling over. Oh and forget getting out of bed without a torch as you are liable to end up face down on them! Yes I say a huge hurrah for concrete! Well done Romans - yet another great invention! I think in the right kitchen it totally works especially if the kitchen has other elements of softness for balance, like lots of natural light and white cabinets! xo

Wow - I've never considered concrete in the kitchen. I think it looks sleek and clean!
